Hawaii’s Opportunity for Active Living Advancement – A Safe Routes to School Initiative

HO’ ALA is a Safe Routes to School initiative launched by PATH with initial support from Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Active Living Research Program and the Hawaii Community Foundatio Omiydar Ohana Fund.

The goal of the HO’ ALA initiative is to improve the health and safety of our island keiki by making it safer and more fun, easy and safe to walk and bike to and from school.

The walk or bike to school offers many benefits including exercise, a chance to see and talk with friends, gain a sense of responsibility, reduce traffic congestion, and save money on gas.

Phase I of the HO’ALA initiative involved 14 schools and support from the County of Hawaii from February 2010 to March of 2011. A total of 6,862 students, parents, teachers, administrators and supporters took part in this island wide initiative. The slideshow below showcases many of the achievements.  Click for HO’ALA Top 10 Achievements 2010-2011

Phase II of the HO’ALA project is now underway! Schools in Phase II include many of the schools from Phase I as well as new schools Honoka’a Elementary and Kealakehe Elementary.
